Suicide Squad #46
DC Comics
Writers: Rob Williams and Dan Abnett
Artist: Jose Luis
I’m digging this crossover. It’s not anything special for the Suicide Squad, but it feels like the culmination of the Aquaman Rebirth story. Atlantis, no longer underwater, is being recognized as a country. Not happy about it, a rogue U.S. General orders Amanda Waller to send in the Suicide Squad. Instead of just sinking Atlantis, like they were told, they instead discover they’re delivering a nuclear bomb. Now, it’s Aquaman versus the Suicide Squad in the third part of the “Sink Atlantis!” crossover.
In this issue, Aquaman assembles his team and faces off against the remaining Suicide Squad. Lord Satanis is leading the remaining Squad, composed of himself, Killer Croc, and Master Jailer. They infiltrate the school of magic, increasing Satanis’ powers, and there they fight Aquaman. Meanwhile, Mera meets with an America Ambassador, and due to the Suicide Squad, prepares a retaliatory attack on the mainland.
This is kind of the issue I’ve been waiting for. I say “kind of” because while there is a fight, it’s a little short. Other than that I’m enjoying the narrative part of this. I usually don’t like Harley Quinn, but her giving a recap by speaking out loud was good. I like that Mera is taking charge as queen of Atlantis. My minor complaint is that Deadshot feels like a side character in this issue. It’s a crossover though and there’s a lot of characters at play, so it’s not a big deal. He’s just my favorite Squad member.
I really like the art in this issue, but a couple of moments really stand out to me. The title page with all the credits has King Shark sitting on a throne and it is amazing. I also really like the way Mera looks descending the throne towards the end of the book. They stand out to me. Everything else is also pretty good. The fights are clean and not at all overcrowded. The characters look good. Killer Croc looks less croc and more goblin in one panel, but it’s only one panel. The colors, by Adriano Lucas, look good, especially when there’s blood in the water. All around some pretty good art.
We’re getting closer and closer to the end of both Dan Abnett’s Aquaman and Rob Williams’ Suicide Squad. As far as crossovers go, this one is pretty good. This issue, in particular, is good. It’s not fully a “Suicide Squad” issue, but they’re involved in a big way. I don’t have any doubt that Abnett and Williams will stick the landing to this.
