    Image Comics

    Writer: Bryan Lee O’Malley

Artists: Leslie Hung & Rachael Cohen

It’s so nice to say that Lottie Person is back. Snotgirl is back!

Following the conclusion of the Snotgirl‘s second arc, Lottie is left wondering if what happened with Caroline meant something. The problem is that she is obsessing over it all. This isn’t surprising since Caroline has been the center of Lottie’s world since the first issue, but this is the first time that Lottie is wondering if there is something more than just a friendship.

Bryan Lee O’Malley continues to have surprisingly deep characters, despite the number of generic archetypes present throughout the series. The characters are deeper than they should be, and this is largely due to O’Malley’s ability to properly build his characters at an appropriate pace in an organic way. The men get much more attention than usual in this issue, as they deal with breakups and run-ins with exes, and it makes for some fun banter and drama. Every character in Snotgirl benefits from the spotlight, making this a delight to read.

Of course, Snotgirl isn’t all gossip and drama, it’s also a mystery, and the intrigue continues to build in this issue. While it does take a backseat to the series establishing its new status quo, there are still a fair amount of secrets beings hinted at throughout the chapter. As always, O’Malley ends the issue on a cliffhanger as Lottie’s life just becomes a bigger mess.

Leslie Hung and Rachael Cohen continue to nail the aesthetic that this story demands. Hung’s pencils are gorgeous, cute, and simplistic. Cohen’s colors are a perfect complement to the art and story, nailing the bright greens, blues, and pinks. If there ever was an example of excellent coloring in comic books, Snotgirl is it. O’Malley, Hung, and Cohen perfectly capture the aesthetic of a generation full of smartphones, social media, and public figures.

Snotgirl continues to be a delight and a refreshing read. While it doesn’t focus on as much mystery as some readers may like, the drama and characters are interesting enough to keep the pages turning. Now is a great time to catch up on the series and join Lottie and company on their wild ride.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
