Shanghai Red #1
Image Comics
Writer: Christopher Sebela
Artist: Joshua Hixon
Revenge stories are about as classic as any form of storytelling. Some of the most beloved stories revolve around the idea of the protagonist thirsting for revenge after being wronged. There has been a recent resurgence of revenge stories that are also actually great in all mediums. The most important part of a revenge story is a protagonist that is more than just vengeful. Shanghai Red continues this trend, as it introduces an intriguing world with a compelling protagonist.
Shanghai Red revolves around a woman named Red, who was enslaved on a ship for three years. This debut issue establishes Red’s plan for freedom and revenge, but also successfully allows the reader to connect with the protagonist. Christopher Sebela has created a wonderful character, who appears deeper than most in the genre. He uses the issue to develop Red through strong dialogue, as well as short but sweet flashbacks. Readers will quickly sympathize with Red’s situation, and may even cheer for her.
Red isn’t the only interesting character in this debut. Her supporting cast of fellow men that were shanghaied (Kidnapped and enslaved on a boat) don’t get too much of a spotlight, but still, push the narrative in organic ways. The crew has understandable feelings regarding Red’s actions, and act accordingly.
Shanghai Red‘s artistic style is also a major part of its success. Joshua Hixon’s art brings the intensity of the writing straight to the reader. The art is dirty, it’s full of red, and overall just makes the passenger’s journey uncomfortable to watch. Shanghai Red has a violent introduction, and the magnitude of Red’s actions is absolutely conveyed by the art. The panels are full of savagery and raw emotion, with colors and layouts that naturally progress the story. Despite all of the violence, Hixon manages to end the story on an almost beautiful note, with a spectacular view of a port and the stars.
Shanghai Red is a gritty and compelling revenge story that puts the character in front of the revenge. There is a lot to look forward to as Red finally sets out to take back her life.
