Writer: Joe Henderson
Artists: Lee Garbett and Antonio Fabela
Letterer: Simon Bowland
The last time Joe Henderson, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela, and Simon Bowland, we got a wonderful story in Skyward. It’s been nearly two years since Skyward wrapped up, and now the creative team is back together for a new series. Shadecraft appears to have a darker story, but still retains the same energy that we saw in Skyward.
Zadie is a high school student that is somewhat of an outcast following a family tragedy. She only has two friends left and is struggling with handling her popularity. Unfortunately, Zadie’s popularity might be the least of her worries. Her shadow is apparently trying to attack her, and she doesn’t know if others are in danger as well.
While there is a good chunk of horror in this issue, most of it deals with some typical high school drama. Garbett’s script is solid, utilizing great slice-of-life moments to make Shadecraft a fun read. Some of the dialogue feels a bit cheesy, but it’s overall well-written. The likable protagonist and supporting cast help to give Shadecraft more appeal than it would have if it was a horror comic.
As great as the writing is, it’s the gorgeous art by Lee Garbett that makes this a must-read. Every panel has a fantastic use of space and composition that makes the most out of the settings around the characters. The characters themselves are wildly expressive. Antonio Fabela’s colors enhance the art in every way possible. It adds a beautiful, yet moody aesthetic The use of lighting is fantastic throughout. Whether the characters are in a classroom or being chased in the dark, every setting that surrounds them is gorgeous.
While it’s hard to tell where this series is going, it’s obvious that it’s worth diving into. The gorgeous visuals, intriguing premise, and entertaining characters all come together to create something fun. It’s light on the horror so it won’t scare off any readers, but just creepy enough to pull you in. This is looking like a solid follow-up to Wayward.
