Seven To Eternity #12
Image Comics
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Jerome Opena & Matt Hollingsworth
The return of Seven To Eternity has been a spectacle, to say the least. Rick Remender has built an incredible fantasy world full of life and has done so in less than three volumes. In Seven To Eternity #12, the journey continues to excite as the series finally gains some momentum following the hiatus.
As far as story progression goes, Seven To Eternity #12 doesn’t actually do much. Fortunately, this isn’t a problem, as Remender brings the most exciting action sequence of the series so far. The stakes are now incredibly high as allegiances are tested. Adam is constantly facing unfair choices as he strives to save both himself and his family. His own ideals clash against his objective, and it leads to some conflict against both the Mud King and those who have imprisoned him. Even though a large chunk of the issue is either dialogue or war, the amount of nuance and intrigue is incomparable.
Seven To Eternity hasn’t been running too long, but still has some of the most fleshed out characters in the medium. Even supporting characters that were introduced only a couple of issues ago are dynamic and understandable. The conflict of interest present at every crossroad defines Remender’s characters, and it leads to unpredictable and captivating pages. Most of the characters are expendable, but it doesn’t feel cheap, and it certainly doesn’t exist just for shock value. Every death is meaningful and every action has authentic motivation.
Jerome Opena nudges this series into a tier of its own. Every issue has an incredible amount of detail that breathes life into this world, and this one is no different. The sky city allows for Opena to exercise his imagination, leading to some spectacular backdrops. Not a single panel looks inappropriate, and every character looks as natural as possible. Matt Hollingsworth is making a strong case for the best artist in 2018, with bright colors that effectively capture how grand this world is. The latter half of the book has especially gorgeous colors, as Hollingsworth opts for a bright conflict full of explosions rather than the typical dull colors we see during a war. Opena and Hollingsworth alone make this series worth the price of admission.
Seven To Eternity is one of the best comic books out right now. With spectacular set-pieces, dynamic characters, and some of the most incredible art out right now, this is a must-read.
