Rick and Morty #47
Oni Press
Writers: Kyle Starks, Karla Pacheco
Artists: Puste, CJ Cannon
It’s been more than a year since the season 3 finale of Rick and Morty. In that time the Rick and Morty comic has been a great substitute, and in my opinion, often better than the show itself.
In this issue of Rick and Morty, we get Interdimensional Cable 3! At the start of the issue, Summer is crying because her favorite TV show is canceled. While the family reacts to Summer’s teenage reaction to it, Morty hooks up the interdimensional cable, and the family all sits down to watch. But, only one channel in, a couple of aliens invade the Smith home looking for technology from Rick.
I don’t think this issue is bad, but I don’t think it’s the best story this comic can tell. It’s just kind of the “standard” Rick and Morty tale. Rick and Morty (and the family, sometimes) get into a predicament because of Rick. Rick outsmarts the antagonists (and gloats about it) and everything is reset at the end. For being “Interdimensional Cable 3” we only see one channel, which while it is the funniest moment in the comic, is only about one page. There are some other comedic moments, but not much. The backup story is fine. It really boils down to “Rick gets drunk” but with some backstory and references to the show.
I’m not too hot on the actual story in this issue, but the art is fantastic. It’s still that same Rick and Morty style, but this feels more cleaned up and detailed. The few aliens we see look great, there are shadows where appropriate. I wish the story had more to it because I would like to see this art explore the whole Rick and Morty-verse. I like the art in the backup too. CJ Cannon did the art on the earlier issues of Rick and Morty so it’s pretty familiar. Again, I like it, but I think it falls under the same umbrella, in that I think the actual story it’s telling is the weaker part.
I think this comic is at it’s best when it tells a longer, multi-part story, and this issue isn’t that. The art on the main story is some of my favorite in this series, but the story just isn’t there.
The story, as best as I can put it, is fine. There are some funny moments, but not too much. The backup story, which for the past few issues have been great, is also another case of “just fine.” If you’ve been reading Rick and Morty for a while, this probably won’t be your favorite issue. But if you’re jonesing for more Rick and Morty while the show is between seasons, this is a good substitute.
Rick and Morty (2015-) #47
Rick and Morty (2015-) #47 has some really great art, but the main story and backup don't do anything new or exciting.
