Comic Review: Quantum and Woody #2

    Quantum and Woody #2

    Valiant Entertainment

    Writer: Christopher Hastings

Artist: Ryan Browne & Ruth Redmond

Quantum and Woody #1 started the series off spectacularly. In fact, the issue was my pick of the month in January. Christopher Hastings and Ryan Brown are a fantastic creative team that is able to perfectly capture the tone and humor of the characters. With the characters out in the spotlight and “saving” the day again, where will this creative team take them next?

As ridiculous as the previous issue was, Quantum and Woody #2 is much wackier. The issue starts on an ice-skating rink and ends in a zoo. In between all of that is a new straight man-type character to assist the duo and a mind-controlling villain. From cover to cover, Hastings’ script is hilarious and maxes out the comedy and thrills. Few Superhero titles have the ridiculous scenarios that Quantum and Woody do, and it makes this serious feel like a breath of fresh air. The comedy is punchy yet endearing, and the characters are full of heart despite the tone of the series.

That heart is what makes Quantum and Woody so special. While Hastings nails the jokes in this issue, he also has a great grasp of the characters. These characters have been a key part of the Valiant Universe since the reboot, and the growth of their relationship is the driving force. Hastings allows new readers to get a good peek at the past while still making it entertaining for longtime readers. The characters of Quantum of Woody are never put to the side and that’s what makes this series so damn entertaining.

Ryan Browne is a dream for this series. His style is perfect for the script, bringing mayhem to the pages. Every panel is full of energy in a way that no other Quantum and Woody series has had so far. The faces have expressions that go beyond what humans are typically capable of. Everything is larger than life and it benefits these characters massively. Ruth Redmond’s colors ensure that the energy is always there in this issue. This issue is bright and is a feast for the eyes thanks to Redmond’s work. Even the flashbacks with subdued colors are full of personality.

Quantum and Woody #2 is another hit for the series. Christopher Hastings and Ryan Browne truly understand the characters and are making this one of Valiant’s best. Any fan of comedy should be reading Quantum and Woody.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
