It’s been over three months since the last issue of New Mutants hit the stands. Following a transition to Destiny of X and tons of delays due to shortages, New Mutants #25 is finally here. Vita Ayala is joined by artists Rod Reis and Jan Duursema, colorist Ruth Redmond, and letterer Travis Lanham.
New Mutants #25 kicks off “The Labors of Magik” arc, focusing on Illyana, Rahne, Dani, and Madelyne Pryor. Illyana has a lot going on in Krakoa and isn’t able to give Limbo her full attention, so she decides that it’s time for someone else to run it. Of course, things don’t all go as planned.
Ayala continues to write these characters at their best, making this a welcome return. Illyana fans will be delighted at this arc. It promises to push the character forward while also paying respects to her history, especially the 1983 Magik miniseries. Rahne and Dani thrive in their supporting roles, while Madelyne finally gets an issue that shows her respect. The storyline itself is interesting as well, going in a fun, unexpected direction. The big twist at the end leaves tons of potential for the rest of the arc.
Rod Reis continues to draw beautiful characters and environments here. The environments deserve all the praise possible, especially in Limbo. The gorgeous reds, oranges, and purples are breathtaking and unnerving, just as one would expect from the setting. There are a few action sequences in this issue that flow smoothly, making them all look good enough to hang on a wall. Reis’ faces are full of emotion, and the expressions significantly enhance the dialogue in the panels. Finally, there are some storybook sequences with a style that matches the fairytale aesthetic. All of the looks, including the character designs click well during these moments.
Towards the end of the issue, Jan Duursema and Ruth Redmond handle some flashback sequences that appear to pay homage to the original Magik miniseries. The style is unique and fits in the modern day, but still resembles what we saw when Magik was trapped in Limbo as a child. These flashbacks look delightful, rounding out an overall creative masterpiece.
New Mutants #25 is a triumphant return for the series and an excellent jumping on point for newcomers. Anyone craving a good Magik or Madelyne Pryor story will find it here.
