Mr. And Mrs. X #2
Marvel Comics
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artists: Oscar Bazaldua &Frank D’Armata
Mr. And Mrs. X #1 was one of the most surprisingly delightful debuts of the year. It had many of the X-Men at their best, dynamic character interactions, and a fun story. While the second issue isn’t as refreshing as the first, this series still appears to be on the right path.
Mr. And Mrs. X #2 picks up where the previous issue left off and leaves the protagonists with a pretty rough honeymoon. Of course, now it appears that Deadpool is a part of the honeymoon, and he has no problem with being the third wheel. Kelly Thompson’s script continues to be fun and lighthearted, with wonderful interactions between the newlyweds and Deadpool. Deadpool plays a surprisingly large role in this issue, and possibly future issues. Deadpool has always been a difficult character to write, but Thompson has a solid grasp of the character, making him just the right kind of annoying. The character dynamics are really what makes this issue enjoyable, and will hopefully be the heart of the series.
The action is as enjoyable as expected. This issue features all sorts of conflicts, and every moment of action is handled well. Personally, I think that the issue would benefit from a little less action, as it consumes most of the issue and leads to most of the wonderful dialogue simply being banter.
Oscar Bazaldua and Frank D’Armata’s art still fits the mood of the series perfectly. It’s a lighthearted artistic style with an emphasis on detail and facial expressions. While the characters do look great, some faces continue to be inconsistent, and a few expressions simply looking uncomfortable for the characters to show. The characters also all look especially young, which is slightly distracting but doesn’t detract from the overall pleasing aesthetic that this book has.
D’Armata’s colors have improved with this issue, as there are a lot of panels that really show off his talent. Gambit’s abilities look especially gorgeous thanks to the colors and strong shading. Backgrounds are usually full of fun colors thanks to the intergalactic setting of the issue.
Mr. And Mrs. X #2 is an enjoyable issue. The characters are well-written and the art continues to shine. Despite a few gripes here and there, Mr. and Mrs. X continues to be one of the best X-Men titles out right now.
