Mercy #2
Image Comics
Writer: Mirka Andolfo
Artist: Mirka Andolfo
It’s been a while since the first issue, but the second chapter of Mirka Andolfo’s new horror series is out now. Mercy‘s debut established a haunting world, interesting characters, and gorgeous art. Now it’s time for some exposition as we get to know a bit more about the monster that is stalking the town.
This latest issue has a few intriguing breakthroughs as Lady Hellaine invites the wealthy to a social event. The party doesn’t exactly go as planned for everyone involved, as pieces start to fall into place for those who want answers. Before too long, things get bloody and out of control. Andolfo does a fantastic job at this issue’s pacing. Her script allows for the suspense to build while also successfully establishing all of the players involved. The dialogue is solid, which is a good thing because there is a lot of it. The slow trickle of horrific moments is made bearable by the strong characters and fascinating conversations. A few panels feature some campy lines, but this suits the style of the book well.
Mercy #2 offers few answers and will give the readers more questions than they had before. A few startling revelations have changed my perspective on the characters. I had an idea of what this book was, but now I’m not so sure. The mystery element thrown in is welcome, and readers who like creepy tales will find plenty to love in this issue. Andolfo has successfully made the waters murky, and it is unclear who the heroes and monsters of the book actually are.
Unsurprisingly, Mercy #2 looks fantastic. Andolfo’s style is one of kind, filling the panels with a captivating blend of beauty, sensuality, and horror. The quality of the art is even more impressive when you consider that Andolfo handles both the script, art, and colors. The colors perfectly evoke the feelings and tension needed in each panel, making Mercy a fully immersive experience. Mercy contains perfect harmony between script and art, and every panel is a delight to look at. Even the gore and horror has a certain beauty to it. Expressive lettering by Fabio Amelia breathes extra life in the script, making it easy to identify the volume and tone of the characters’ voices.
Mercy is shaping up to be another successful series by Andolfo. Things might be moving along a bit slow, but the gorgeous art and constant tension make this a fantastic read.
