Marvel Comics (2019-) #1001
Marvel Comics
Writer: Various
Artist: Various
All the way back in faraway August 2019, Marvel released Marvel Comics #1000. It’s a nearly 100 page giant, with every page having a different creative team behind it. I knew that there would be a Marvel Comics #1001, but that’s all I knew about it. Opening it up, it shouldn’t have been surprising that this issue, now roughly 30 pages, shares the same format. Each page is a different story, with a different writer/artist team behind it.
What is the “main” story is from Al Ewing and ACO shows us a tiny bit more about this new Masked Raider. Only a tiny bit though, since only the first and last page focus on the character. And it’s also in a kind of palindrome way. The same dialogue and page layout, but some of the panels are different, offering some small clues to the larger mystery.
As with the previous issue, there are some stories that definitely hit their target and some that don’t. Brian Posehn and Scott Koblish are back together for a Deadpool story, and it’s okay at best. I’m just not the world’s biggest fan of the merc with a mouth. But I’m sure there are some people out there who love it.
Some stories are just fun little “haha” moments that I really like. Thanks to G. Willow Wilson and Pasqual Ferry, it’s canon that Beast enjoys ASMR videos. From now until forever, when he’s not being an X-Man he’ll always be watching ASMR videos. At least in my mind. On the other hand, there’s a Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal page that’s… there. It ends in a drawing of MCU Thanos in a speedo, and that’s pretty neat.
Like with Marvel Comics #1000, I don’t think you can really give this issue a score. Granted, I still will, there’s just so many creative teams in this one issue, and it’s less than half the size of the first one! I think anyone who reads this will find some pages and stories that they like, and others that they don’t. It’ll be different for everyone, and the best way to find out is to pick up a copy and read it.
Marvel Comics (2019-) #1001
Marvel Comics (2019-) #1001 continues Marvel's celebration of 80 years. With a different creative team and story on every page, this issue has it's share of hits and misses, but remains fun for the most part.
