Lois Lane #2
DC Comics
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artists: Mike Perkins and Paul Mounts
Firstly, Lois Lane #2 was an improvement on the already excellent issue #1. Greg Rucka feels like he was tailor suited to be writing Lois, and this issue really cements that fact. For example, we’re immediately thrown into the in-universe popular opinion of Lois Lane. Her kiss with Superman was caught on camera. As a result, the majority of people don’t like Lois.
Rucka expertly deals with the themes of misogyny. Above all, it feels subtle and comes across as organic. Nothing that’s said in the comic is forced, and it reads as if we’re watching real people discuss these things.
Lois’s bonds with people are really what makes this issue shine. Throughout the issue, she has quite a few one on one interactions. The 3 most important ones are Clark, Perry, and Renee. Each of those interactions achieves different results, and they all show a deep understanding of the different facets of Lois’ personality.
Lois and Clark’s conversation early on highlighted why they are one of the best couples in the DC universe. Rucka writes them exactly like how a strong relationship should be. They respect each other as individuals, and while Clark is Superman, there are some battles he can trust Lois to win. We see her absolute determination in that scene, and Perkins’ art really excels at catching their body language.
Watching Lois and Renee bounce off each other is stellar. There’s a scene where they’re in a diner discussing things, and this is where that Perkins and Rucka’s teamwork really shine. There’s a single panel where Lois stares straight at the reader and this one single panel is one of the best panels I’ve ever seen.
I honestly don’t have a major complaint on the issue. I want to know how and why Renee and Lois got to be a team, but it doesn’t detract from the book. It accentuates the fact that this is still in the greater DC universe.
Overall, I really loved this issue, and I’m really excited to see where it’s going next. This reads like an old noir film that happens to take place in the DC universe. Lois makes an excellent main character, and Rucka was the perfect choice to write her.
