Justice League #10
DC Comics
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Francis Manapul
Scott Snyder’s Justice League is just about everything I want from a Justice League book. Snyder’s first arc, The Totality, was packed full of everything I love about the DC Universe. So when Snyder mentioned that his second arc would focus on Aquaman, one of my favorite characters, I was very excited. So here we are with the prelude to Drowned Earth.
This issue follows Aquaman and Wonder Woman as they travel to the Graveyard of the Gods. While searching, Aquaman tells the story of Arion, Atlantis’ greatest hero. Arion created a cosmic conch which called upon other ocean planets to form a union. Unfortunately, many of these aliens were invaders, sparking a great war. Once the Justice League finds the Graveyard, they meet these ancient aliens. Now the Justice League must stop these gods before they drown the earth.
The relationship between Aquaman and Wonder Woman is so natural, and I’m glad to see Snyder explore it here. It wasn’t really until Jeff Parker’s run that we got to see these characters work together. With both their roots in fantasy and mythology, these two characters make a great team. One of the things I’m most looking forward to in this arc is the interactions between these two.
I wasn’t aware that Francis Manapul was on art this issue, which was a great surprise. There are plenty of draw-dropping sequences in this issue that we’ve come to expect form Manapul. Manapul’s design for the alien invaders is very innovative. There’s a great panel of the aliens invading earth in boat-like spaceships. And of course, we get a Lovecraftian space-kraken. However, the best panel in the entire issue is Manapul’s depiction of the Hall of Justice. We get a beautiful panel of families and tourists outside the Hall of Justice. The joy and happiness depicted in this panel is representative of why I love Snyder’s run so far. Manapul’s use of color in this panel is perfect.
Overall, Justice League #10 is a promising start to a new arc. Although this issue was full of exposition, I enjoyed the setup. It definitely doesn’t hurt that Manapul was on art. Just like the rest of his run, Scott Snyder is adding new and over-the-top ideas to the DC Universe. This book is all about fun, and I can’t wait to see what Snyder has in store for Aquaman and the rest of the League.
