    Jook Joint #2

    Image Comics

    Writer: Tee Franklin

    Artist: Alitha Martinez

Jook Joint #1 was a pleasant surprise last month. I came in expecting a solid horror story with strong feminist themes. While I got what I came for, I also got an incredible look at domestic violence and the way it affects women. Jook Joint also offers a powerful opportunity to see empowered survivors of domestic violence.

Tee Franklin’s script is enjoyable throughout, with fine pacing and authentic-feeling dialogue. This issue has a much slower pace this time, trading some of the shocking scenes for strong character development. Franklin explains the coven quite a bit here through dialogue while avoiding making anything feel long-winded. The characters themselves are growing into more dynamic roles, especially the abuse survivor, as she contemplates what her next move should be.

    Jook Joint #2

One of the more interesting aspects of Jook Joint is its ability to educate readers on its difficult subject matter while creating a powerful horror story. Like the previous issue, Jook Joint #2 opens with a trigger warning for survivors of abuse. This issue, in particular, does an excellent job at covering the effects of the cycle of abuse in a natural way. The difficult decisions that survivors need to make are well highlighted throughout the issue, even if this story comes with a paranormal context.

    Jook Joint #2

Alitha Martinez continues to capture the beautiful, yet the ominous tone of Jook Joint. Her art often has thick lines that feel somewhat chaotic. At the same time, she manages to capture the beauty and strength the characters, making everyone feel empowered. The colors are dark, yet avoid feeling gloomy or edgy. They add a subdued intensity to the art, making for an atmospheric experience.

Jook Joint #2 is another successful chapter. Tee Franklin’s script deserves all the praise that it can receive. It’s as entertaining as it is educational. Fans of empowered, well-written women and good horror should be reading this series.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
