Writer: Magdalene Visaggio
Artists: Gleb Melnikov & Luis Guerrero
Letterer: Gabriella Downie
Jinny Hex is one of the best characters to come out of the recent run of Young Justice. The character is a breath of fresh air and adds a welcome spin to the legacy of Jonah Hex. Now, Jinny Hex is finally getting her own special with a wonderful opportunity to shine. This issue is written by Magdalene Visaggio (Kim & Kim) with art by Gleb Melnikov, colors by Luis Guerrero, and letters by Gabriella Downie.
Jinny Hex is a great addition to DC’s mythos, giving Jonah Hex a worthy legacy character. Her character is well-designed, with a fun personality to boot. Still, until this special, most of Jinny’s backstory has been a mystery. Visaggio does a great job of adding life to the character. She also gives Jinny a strong link to Jonah Hex, with an exciting story about the family’s legacy.
This is a longer issue, which allows readers to not only get to know Jinny but some of her supporting cast as well. Lady Bird is my favorite character to emerge from this issue. Jinny and Lady Bird have fantastic chemistry here. Their friendship feels sincere, and Lady Bird’s perspective and intuition is a great foil to Jinny’s personality and approach. Three-Eyed Jack, the villain introduced in this issue, is also a great antagonist. Visaggio uses the new villain to link Jinny to Jonah. He is also especially close to Jinny, making their encounter throughout the issue personal. There are also a few other appearances by a couple of other characters, both new and familiar. Everyone that appears in this issue leaves a meaningful impact on the story. This issue clearly exists to give Jinny a meaningful legacy, and Visaggio does a stellar job of doing just that.
Melnikov’s art is solid throughout the issue, and really shines when it comes to backgrounds. The setting of this book is exactly what you would expect from a Hex title, with dust, barns, and small-town vibes throughout. It all looks great, especially with Guerrero’s colors breathing life into it all. The action scene at the end of the issue looks fantastic thanks to Guerrero’s colors adding some magic to the panels.
Jinny Hex Special #1 is a delightful read. Visaggio makes the most out of these characters, building their pasts while also giving them a bright future. The art is beautiful throughout, making this special the complete package. Those who want a fun one-shot should pick this one up.
