Infinite Dark #2
Image Comics
Writer: Ryan Cady
Artist: Andrea Mutti
I’m a bad person to watch horror movies with. Besides jump scares, monsters and slasher killers don’t generally get to me. The concept of this comic puts me on edge, though. The universe has died, the last remnants of humanity are living in a ship alone in the infinite dark. Two years after the heat death of the universe, there’s been a murder. This is the kind of horror that gets me.
The technical director for The Orpheus, murdered someone else. Deva Karrel was in pursuit of him when he opened an airlock. He was sucked into the void, and Deva saw a shadow from the nothingness. Now, in Infinite Dark #2, a few days later, Deva is trying to cope with what she saw. An assistant to the head technical director is taken to study the crime scene. While undergoing therapy, Deva learns she’s not the first to see something from the void.
The main problem I have with this issue is also something that I can’t really count as a negative. The end of the universe concept is what made me read this book, but from this issue, it looks like it’s more of a murder mystery. That’s only because we’re two issues in though. I’m sure the motivations behind it are related to the end of the universe, but for now, it’s a little too “whodunnit”. Besides that, I do like the main character, Deva. She’s seen some scary stuff and now has to deal with it, while also keeping literally the last people in existence safe. Everyone else isn’t as fleshed out, and are feeling a little flat.
In this issue, the scene where Deva goes through therapy is depicted well. We go from the empty feeling metal hallways of the ship to trees and grass and nature. Then things start changing and warping into the shadow creature/monster Deva saw. That sequence/those pages really stand out to me. Besides that, I think the art is good. The colors really add to the feel of the empty ship. The characters look good but can lack expression. Everybody has a kind of blank/neutral look to them.
I like this comic. This isn’t as strong of an issue as the first one, but it’s good. The setting of it all is really what’s keeping my interest. The story seems like it’s more of a simple murder/mystery type right now. But I think with time it’ll build int something way more interesting. Besides Deva, the main character, everyone else is a little flat. The art is good, but most characters don’t have any expression to them. I like this issue, but I think the series needs a little more time to breathe and expand more. If the premise sounds interesting to you than it’s definitely worth a read.
Infinite Dark #2
Infinite Dark #2 continues the story of a murder after the end of the universe. The story is still interesting, but besides the main character, everyone else feels flat. The art is good and captures the bleak vibe, but the characters lack expression throughout.
