Immortal Hulk #8
Marvel Comics
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Joe Bennett
Well, Halloween may be over but the horror is still dropping in piece by piece with the latest issue of Immortal Hulk.
Ewing continues to bring the eerie feeling with the latest issue, which body horror fans will most likely enjoy. The green goliath is chopped into pieces in separate jars. Yep. Frankenstein’s monster much?
I really like this series, I’m so interested to see how Ewing has brought Hulk back to his horror roots while also telling an interesting story. He seems to be delving into a lot of comic book history, bringing back old characters, using classic tropes and expanding the lore bit by bit with a hint of dread. The Hulk, for me, was never one of my favourite characters. I liked the idea of the two tortured souls at war and the psychology of Bruce Banner rather than the issues. That being said I always welcomed the glowing green powerhouse in team-ups and events, but there’s something about this series I’m just absolutely loving, and I think it’s the horror take. He really knows how to make you feel uncomfortable.
The issue itself isn’t massively action-packed, but there’s plenty for you to keep yourself entertained with. I’m still astonished that, in this day and age, there are people still in the Marvel Universe that think they can contain the Hulk. I mean come on guys. HULK IS THE STRONGEST (and scariest) THERE IS!!! As the radioactive giant thinks up the most horrific way to escape, we turn our attention to Carol Danvers and her new ‘Gamma Flight’ to deal with Hulk and these reoccurring Gamma nightmares.
Art continues to be drawn by the fantastic Joe Bennett who perfectly channels Ewings horrific vision. If it isn’t the creepy facial expressions, it’s full on body horror and transformations (this issue having two of the most messed up, Chronenberg-esque metamorphosis’). I don’t know is it the drawings, the colouring by Paul Mounts or the inking by Ruy Jose, or just a combination by all three, but the book gives me a very classic 80’s vibe. The style is really unique and detailed, which adds to the creepiness factor.
Overall, another great issue. Definitely something worth the read if you haven’t picked up the series yet. Ewing and Bennett continue to knock it out of the park and I look forward to seeing how truly strange and scary we can go.
