Hellions #1
Marvel Comics
Writer: Zeb Wells
Artists: Stephen Segovia & David Curiel
Krakoa is for all mutants, right? What should the good guys do with all the baddies, then? Fortunately for everyone, Mister Sinister is willing to band the most troublesome mutants together and form a team that is sure to rehabilitate them.
The new Hellions are made up of Scalphunter, Wild Child, Empath, Nanny, Orphanmaker, Psylocke, and Havoc. Some of these mutants are more problematic than others but rest assured that everyone has their role here. Writer Zeb Wells does a phenomenal job of establishing the tone of the series. The mutants are all given proper introductions, which is welcome since a lot of these characters aren’t too well known to the casual crowd.
The first issue of Hellions has a good blend of humor, emotion, and action. The cold open, in particular, is full of great moments that feel impactful. The dialogue is all written, with some especially good moments from Mister Sinister and Cyclops. The pacing is well done, and this issue gives just the right amount of information to set up the series for success.
The idea of a team of bad guys certainly isn’t original, but every moment in Hellions #1 feels fresh. This isn’t your typical antihero story, especially because the team includes a couple of good guys that really shouldn’t be grouped with their peers. The various dynamics will certainly be enjoyable to observe in future issues.
Stephen Segovia & David Curiel are a fantastic team. Hellions #1 looks sharp, with an art style that allows for the action to flow exceptionally well. The quiet moments look great with strong character placement and beautiful backgrounds. The characters all look their best, with emotion fueling them throughout the panels.
The panel layouts look great as well, walking the line between simple and creative. None of the layouts are particularly revolutionary, but they allow for the book to be read at an enjoyable pace. Nothing feels choppy, and the creative team does a great job of maximizing the gutter space. This is easily some of the best sequential art in the line so far.
Hellions #1 is easily one of the best debuts for Dawn of X. The creative team does a fantastic job of setting up the stakes for the team of antiheroes. It’s full of action, emotion, and humor. X-Men fans should absolutely pick this one up.
