    Gideon Falls #15

    Image Comics

    Writer: Jeff Lemire

    Artist: Andrea Sorrentino

While Gideon Falls has been making some big moves recently, it is expanding its world exponentially. We thought we were dealing with one world, then two…now we don’t even know, and that has created some excitement, but it comes with a downside. Let’s do this!

This issue deals a lot with Father Fred and his journey, which has been confusing, to say the least. Doctor Xu gets some page time here as well as she is succumbing to the mystery and giving up her life as a therapist. Rebecca returns, which if you haven’t been paying attention, was brought up for a hot second in issue 9. The problem with the last few chapters of Gideon Falls, including this one, is we are on a confusing ride without much framing to help us understand. We love these characters, but readers can only so much blurring of reality.

I can’t say that Lemire is failing because he is an established writer, and I know he is taking us somewhere. Everything leading up the this has been inspiring for someone like me who enjoys this genre so much. Issue 16 should bring us back down to Earth because we can’t be stranded in these time loops much longer without moving the store forward.

Andrea Sorrentino is still making art look easy. In 15 issues, he has never faltered with every cell on every page being magnificent. Dave Stewart is on colors here, and he needs some attention as well because he uses the right palette every time. It is drab, and it never pops because Gideon Falls is a dull place that never pops. These two deserve special recognition for putting their best foot forward in every issue and never churning out basic square and rectangle cells.

Gideon Falls is in a strange place that has been somewhere interesting, but mostly hard to follow. Don’t but the book down, keep reading. Lemire will take us back to the Gideon Falls we know, but in the meantime, get lost in the artwork. I still recommend this so people can follow along and keep up with the story of the Black Barn.

Chris is usually busy with his two minions but is somehow able to make time for at least 150 movies a year and keeping up with his growing comic collection. He has about 5 minutes a day of quiet time and wastes every second of it.
