Sina Grace wrote Ghosted In LA, a series that has recently become one of my favorite slice of life comic series. With that in mind, picking up Getting It Together was a no-brainer for me. This time, Sina Grace is working with newcomer artist Jenny D. Fine and Image Comics.
Ghosted In LA was full of supernatural elements, but Getting It Together is much more grounded. It’s about as slice-of-life as you can get, embracing a narrative that should feel familiar to those who watch dramatic ensemble shows. Getting It Together is about a group of young people in their twenties as they try to navigate their lives. A couple experiences a break-up and the changes that come with that ripples through their entire friend group.
Grace does a fantastic job of writing these characters, especially considering that there aren’t a lot of pages to establish them. The dialogue feels natural throughout. Slang is used throughout but doesn’t feel excessive at all. Most of the characters are likable, though some will impact readers more than others depending on their personalities. Some characters get a bit more attention than others, but this is to be expected in the first issue.
There is likely going to be at least one or two moments throughout the issue that readers have been through in their own lives. Sina’s script is easy to connect to, making this issue more compelling than you’d think. Breakups, dates, being caught in between friends, and more are all explored in this issue.
Jenny D. Fine does a great job of bringing the characters to life. Everyone is expressive, with natural looks that could tell stories without the need of text. The expressions are often larger than life, with over the top faces that bring charm to the pages. The layouts make the events between the panels easy to follow too. More importantly, all of the conversations are entertaining and paced well. M.X Struble’s colors add tons of depth to the pages. The tone of the story is also established through the colors.
Getting It Together is a solid start to the miniseries that carries some great vibes. The characters are easy to connect to and the art is great. Check this one out if you are interested in ensemble dramedy tv series.
