Future State is officially underway, and with that, a glimpse at future heroes. There are many heroes across the multiverse, and Death Metal‘s finale gives quite a few a chance to shine. This week, we get a look at Yara and how she carries the mantle of Wonder Woman. Joëlle Jones handles both this issue’s writing and art, with colors by Jordie Bellaire. Clayton Cowles handles the letters for Future State: Wonder Woman #1.
Joëlle Jones is coming off of a strong Catwoman run in which she also handled both writing and art. Yara is a character who is entering the scene with a lot of excitement. She is a breath of fresh air, and Jones does everything you could ask for with this debut. Jones’ Wonder Woman manages to feel both fresh and familiar at the same time. She is reckless and bold. She is also sharp and calculating. We have never had a Wonder Woman like Yara, but I also can’t think of anyone more worthy to carry on the mantle.
This issue doesn’t just have a well-written protagonist either. The opening battle sequence is dazzling. The story throughout the issue is also small in scope, but wildly entertaining thanks to a great supporting character and some strong dialogue. The issue features some hilarious banter, making this book easy to love as readers get to know Yara and the world around her.
Jones’ art makes Future State: Wonder Woman #1 such an easy read. The big battle at the beginning of this issue features some great panels that have just enough going on to make the action flow well. The monster that Yara fights is fierce but majestic. After the battle, Jones continues to astound with great character designs and beautiful settings.
Jordie Bellaire’s colors allow for this issue’s art to really shine. Everything is wonderfully bright, making the most out of this creative issue. The pages are full of yellows, oranges, and greens that give the art a more natural tone. Even mundane settings like an airport feel like they belong in Yara’s world. Clayton Cowles’ letters are as great as one would expect. They add flavor to every page, making the letters fit in this world just fine.
Future State: Wonder Woman #1 is a sensational debut for Yara. She is bold and exciting, making this one of the most exciting debuts for a Wonder Woman comic in years. Jones and the rest of the creative team have something special here.
