DC Comics
Writer: Becky Cloonan & Michael W. Conrad
Artist: Jen Bartel
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
So far, Future State has treated Wonder Woman well. The iconic name is currently carried by Yara, who brings a fresh but familiar feel to the comics. While I’ve already fallen in love with the new Wonder Woman, I still can’t stop caring about Diana. Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman allows for us to see what Diana has been up to. Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1 is written by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad. Jen Bartel draws this issue, while Pat Brosseau handles the letters.
Like the rest of Future State, Immortal Wonder Woman #1 takes place in the future. Most of the heroes we know are long gone, but Diana is still going strong. There are a few familiar faces throughout this issue (including a sentimental conversation with a spirit/ghost), but most of this issue focuses on Diana and the rest of the Amazonians. Cloonan and Conrad’s script is mostly quiet and somber, with many heartfelt interactions. The story is told in an almost poetic manner, making this a delightful read.
Despite the tone that most of this issue has, Darkseid is coming. The looming threat comes with a sense of urgency for Diana and the few remaining heroes of Earth. The final few pages are explosive, with some hard-hitting moments. It’s a strong opening issue that checks all the marks of a fun Wonder Woman comic. It’s all a bit too familiar at times, but that doesn’t stop this from being an enjoyable experience.
Immortal Wonder Woman #1 is a great read, but it’s Jen Bartel that makes this a must-read book. Her work is gorgeous, with beautiful colors filling every panel. Her colors are bright and bring an unbelievable amount of energy to the story, The characters themselves, especially Diana, look great too. The aged hero still retains her strong yet graceful demeanor. Darkseid is a menacing, statuesque force on every page, making for a great juxtaposition for Diana.
The action flows well due to some great sequential work by Bartel. Everything is easy to follow, allowing readers to fully take in this story. Pat Brosseau’s letters are also noteworthy, with some great creative choices throughout the issue. Voices are clear, and the fonts chosen throughout significantly help with immersion.
While most of us have read this type of story before, this is still a wonderful debut. The script is somber and impactful. Bartel’s art is nothing short of astounding. Wonder Woman fans will absolutely want to pick this one up.
