    Death or Glory #11

    Image Comics

    Writer: Rick Remender

    Artist: Bengal

    Letters: Rus Wooton

Rick Remender and Bengal’s high-speed thriller is coming to an end. This arc started off pretty quietly, but it has escalated to a fast and wild chase. How does it all end?

Glory and the gang have their backs against the wall. Red’s appearance in the battle has helped shift the momentum, but the odds are still against the good guys. Remender and Bengal come together to give us one last stellar fight. This shouldn’t be surprising, but Remender isn’t afraid to take risks in this final issue, and no one feels safe during the final confrontation.

The pacing throughout this issue is nearly perfect, with a good blend of action, dialogue, and inner monologues. None of the events feel rushed, and this issue certainly never feels dull. A couple of the protagonists get some great moments to shine here too. Of course, the standouts are Glory and Red, who have fantastic chemistry in this issue. Even though the two haven’t had much time together throughout this series, Remender successfully makes their relationship feel authentic.

It’s a good thing that the two feel so close too since this whole series is built upon what they have. If readers didn’t already know how close Glory and Red are, they definitely will when they conclude this series. This issue is as touching as it is intense, and it’s not often that Remender flexes his ability to write about love this well.

None of the excitement would exist without Bengal’s stellar work. The characters look great in action.  They all still have over-the-top expressions that add extra charm to everything. This especially applies to Glory, whose face can tell an entire range of emotions in a single panel. The panels flow especially well, making the action easy to follow so that the reader can quickly move from panel to panel. The colors make the action feel incredibly fast thanks to some great palette choices. Even the quiet moments are beautiful, with lush blues and greens to give this book the sendoff that it deserves. Rus Wooton’s letters also bring the energy with some exciting boxes and creative font decisions.

Death or Glory #11 is a beautiful sendoff for this series. Some of Remender and Bengal’s best work is in this issue, and I’m going to be sad to see Glory go.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
