DCeased The Unkillables #3
DC Comics
Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Karl Mostert
DCeased is DC zombies, in essence. Using the anti-life equation, Darkseid unleashed a virus that turns people into mindless killing machines. The original series follows the big-time heroes, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and their type. But here in DCeased: The Unkillables we follow Red Hood, Detective Gordon, Cassandra Cain, Deathstroke, and a handful of villains. It’s the end of their world, and they’re all together protecting an orphanage full of children. Because even the villains can’t leave children alone at the end of the world.
This final issue picks up immediately where #2 left us. An infected Bane breaks the wall holding back hordes of the infected. Things just get worse from there, as the remaining heroes/villains fight to defend the orphans on a trip from Bludhaven, to Gotham. They’re looking for shelter in Poison Ivy’s garden safe zone, but the road between them is full of the infected. Credit where credit is due, this issue can be pretty brutal. It’s a handful of villains, and a couple of heroes, defending two buses full of children against cities full of zombies. And on top of it all, zombie Wonder Woman shows up and just… it’s brutal. But I won’t go more into it than that, because I think if you’re reading this you’ll want to read it all for yourself anyways.
In the first issue, I think the art is a little iffy. I still have the same nitpicks about it now, actually. If there’s a close up on a face, it looks off to me. They just don’t look quite right. But I’ve got to admit, every aspect of the art really comes together perfectly in the action scenes. This comic is made primarily of action scenes, and it’s too good. Panels showing some pretty up close deaths, and how brutal and awful they are. There are wider panels showing the same feeling but on a wider scale. It all just works so well in showing the carnage of the characters literally fighting to the death. Because that’s exactly what they’re doing.
I don’t think there’s a Tom Taylor story I don’t like. I don’t know if I’ve seen all his work, but what I have I always enjoy. This is no exception to that. I think with the characters and story he’s been setting up, the climax of this miniseries hits the nail on the head. Some of DC Comics’ deadliest characters are fighting off hordes of death coming for them. The art perfectly represents how savage that fight can get. If you’ve been reading this series, I don’t see why you wouldn’t read this final issue. If you didn’t read the original DCeased, you should drop everything and do that, but come back and read DCeased: The Unkillables.
The Unkillables
DCeased: The Unkillables is the finale to the story of the heroes, antiheroes, and villains we've been following in the DC zombie apocalypse. Amazing art captures the carnage and tone of the story, making this an ending that fans of the DCeased story should absolutely read.
