Bliss #1
Image Comics
Writer: Sean Lewis
Artist: Caitlin Yarsky
How far will a father go to save his sick son? What monstrous acts will he commit to keep his family safe and healthy? This story gets explored in fiction all of the time because of how compelling and relating the narrative is. Most fathers will do anything to protect their children, so readers can easily connect to the protagonists. Still, despite how often the story is told, there is always room for a new one. Bliss #1 is the latest story for readers to connect to, and creators Sean Lewis and Caitlin Yarsky bring a neat twist to everything.
The creators of Coyotes have crafted another grim tale, this time with a story that takes place in a run-down city called Feral City. Sean Lewis’ script is depressing, as readers get to know the circumstances that surround the protagonist and his family. Desperate to save his son, the father becomes a personal hitman for three shady individuals. To set the story apart from the others, Sean Lewis throws in The Bliss, a drug that erases all of the user’s worst memories. While the specifics of the drug and its uses aren’t explored too much in this issue, the added twist is enough to compel readers to keep moving forward.
Lewis’ script is solid, with strong dialogue and pacing that will tear down readers. The effective use of flashbacks allows for readers to get to know all of the characters. and their motivations well. The father is a dynamic character who is more than just a desperate father. The dark setting is intriguing, full of crime, and a sense of magic. Bliss benefits greatly from a second reading due to the flashbacks and current events, but it is by no means a difficult read.
Caitlin Yarsky brings Feral City to life with dark but beautiful art. The bold lines mixed with expressive faces leads to a gritty tone without the need for an overly edgy style. Yarsky does it all in Bliss: Pencils, inks, and colors. It’s a fantastic looking book that allows for the script to move along naturally. Most of the emotional beats in this story are made possible by Yarsky’s work. This is a great duo with great chemistry.
Bliss #1 is a grim but strong tale about family and what people will do to keep their families together. Lewis and Yarsky might have another solid series on their hands. Fans of crime stories will want to check this one out.
