Betty & Veronica (2018-) #5
Archie Comics
Writer: Jamie Lee Rotante
Artist: Sandra Lanz
Graduating from high school is a very stressful time in anyone’s life. There’s a lot of big decision making going on, and some of it can set the course for your life. And you’re making those choices when you’re still pretty much a kid still. On top of that, there’s friendships and relationships to navigate through and might have to say goodbye to. It’s a crazy time, and this Betty & Veronica series captures those feelings.
Betty & Veronica (2018-) #5 sees the longtime friends through the end of their senior prom and graduation. But of course, it’s not smooth sailing for either of them. Betty & Veronica are facing problems with their friends, their families, and even with each other. But together the two of them decide to work everything out between themselves and help their friends out at the same time.
I’ve really been enjoying this series, and this issue is no different. A lot of the problems they’ve been dealing with are all realistic and I think most people can relate to them. Everything they’ve been dealing with, from their friendship, to what they’re doing after high school, all gets a resolution in this issue. There’s even something kind of serious that takes place in this issue, but it’s solved in two or three pages. It’s a little blunt, and everyone gets a happy ending, but this is the Archie comics universe, so I don’t mind it so much. Plus, you can see the character growth from the previous issues in this one.
I’m still not too much of a fan of the art, but it’s definitely grown on me over time. Mainly, I think the faces look a bit off to me. I couldn’t say exactly why, but they just do. Everything else about the art is good though. I think the character designs are great, and they all go through a lot of different clothing changes. I really like the colors, too. They’re a bit flat, but there’s some shading and everything stands out from the color next to it.
Overall I think that this is a pretty good final issue. Some of the side plots get a solution that’s a little too convenient. And there are some parts of the art that I’m not a fan of. But I think if this was longer than five issues, the problems I have with it wouldn’t really exist. But it is what it is, and it’s a fun self-contained story. If you’ve been reading and enjoying this series, you’ll enjoy this issue.
Betty & Veronica (2018-) #5
Betty & Veronica (2019-) #5 shows the two friends navigate their way through high school graduation, and the problems that can come with it. Some plot points are solved too conveniently, but otherwise a fun final issue for the mini-series.
