Batman: Prelude to the Wedding #1

    DC Comics

    Writer: Tim Seeley

Artists: Brad Walker, Otto Schmidt, Jordie Bellaire

It’s almost upon us folks, wedding bells are beginning to chime. Or is that the sound of clashing swords? Find out in this week’s Batman: Prelude to the Wedding Part One: “Robin vs Rha’s Al Ghul”!

Batman and his writer Tom King both take a back seat this week, allowing Tim Seeley to take the reigns in the prelude/tie-in for the big event. The issue focuses primarily on Damian and Selina’s relationship, something that the series has surprisingly avoided. There are some really nice character building moments throughout the issue, mixed with plenty of action to keep the story going.

Seeley writes a fun Damian, who is going through the motions adapting to having Selina as his new step-mom, while also having to encounter this new mysterious threat named ‘Aion’. Seeley keeps the dialogue flowing, having the two main characters banter throughout the fight. Damian’s fight, however, becomes more confusing and warped as it goes on, seeing burning buildings, a miniature ally and a possible future of the Batman legacy. Seeley’s characterization of Damian and Selina is an enjoyable read, bringing together two of the Bat-family’s more ‘rebellious’ members closer together.

The art for the issue is a mixed bag. At some points it works well with the action, adding to the fluidity and ferocity of the fight, while at some points the characters look slightly off, especially in close-ups. It’s nothing too terrible and Brad Walker’s art does work, but it can be a bit off-putting at times. The backgrounds of Wayne Manor, the arcade, and the city look fantastic. The coloring and lighting really do stand out thanks to Jordie Bellaire.

The story ends with an epilogue supplied by artist Otto Schmidt. No spoilers, but it ends with a bit of a bang, something sinister is on the horizon and it certainly isn’t the wedding cake. Overall, Seeley’s handling of these characters is fantastic and makes me want to see more fun side stories like this, especially involving Damian and Selina. Plenty of action and plenty of heart, the newest Batman prelude is worth a read, and I certainly can’t wait for the other parts.

A fun chapter that builds the excitement for 'the Wedding' by focusing on the other members of the Bat-family.
