Avengers (2018-) #33
Marvel Comics
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Javier Garron
It feels like forever since I’ve read an issue of Avengers. It’s only been two months, but it feels like a lot longer. We’re lucky, I guess, that the two-month pause happened right after the previous story arc ended, and this new one began. And boy oh boy, what a great new story arc to kick off the Avengers return to the regular publication.
Avengers #33 follows Moon Knight, as he fights some of the most powerful Avengers members. The crazy thing is, he beats them. For unknown reasons, Marc Spector is gathering power from other heroes, and an army of Moon priests and undead mummies. I usually try not to give away spoilers for an issue, but that’s literally all that happens in this one. Moon Knight fights Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, and a couple of other characters for their power. There’s no reveal why, but it from some context clues and the title of the book, i’d say it’s an Avengers level threat.
The issue is light on the story, but it really delivers when it comes to the art. Off the top of my head, I couldn’t place where I’ve seen Javier Garron’s art before. But looking into it, he’s done some of my favorite recent series, including Mile Morales: Spider-Man, and the late 2018 Ant-Man & The Wasp mini-series. The action in this issue is so good. We start off with Moon Knight fighting Iron Fist. It’s something I didn’t know we needed, but it’s absolutely worth seeing. On Moon Knight’s journey to fight other heroes, we see some really different visual locations, each with its own distinct look. From K’un Lun to Wakanda to the moon. Javier Garron, with Jason Keith on the coloring, make this issue very pleasing, visually.
There’s not much more to say about this issue, without spoiling it. I think what I already wrote goes a little too much into it, honestly. But there’s nothing revealing in this issue. Moon Knight fights some guys, and that’s pretty much it. With that though, I think this issue works in hyping up whatever is coming next. Jason Aaron continues to bring these big stories that feel like an appropriate Avengers level threat. On top of that Javier Garron and Jason Keith’s art should make everyone want to read this comic. And you should read it. For a final thought, please let me reiterate: Moon Knight fights Iron fist, and it goes on for a good number of pages. If that doesn’t make you want to read it, I don’t know what would.
Avengers (2018-) #33
Light on the story, the issue sets the hype for the new story arc by giving us Moon Knight fighting various other Avengers. Fantastic art from Javier Garron and Jason Keith make this issue absolutely worth checking out.
