I’ve been mostly disconnected with Peter Parker over the last couple of years. I spent some time with the Spencer run, but eventually fell off, satisfied with only reading Miles Morales and Silk related Spidey books. The Zeb Wells run is an opportunity to get me invested in Peter again, and so far, this is worth sticking around for. For Amazing Spider-Man #2, Wells is joined by artist John Romita Jr, colorist Scott Hanna, and letterer Joe Caramagna.
Wells is a talented creator, having created Hellions, one of the best X-Men books in the last couple decades. Peter Parker hasn’t been in the best place over the last couple decades, with books walking the line between average and good enough. The first issue of this run looked like it would continue this trend, with mostly uninteresting Peter moments being juxtaposed with somewhat interesting villain activity. While this issue still hasn’t solved the Peter problem, the plot with Tombstone is genuinely compelling.
This issue goes in a few interesting directions, and the brewing war around Spider-Man hits every beat that it needs to. The first few pages aren’t remarkable, but Wells’ buildup towards the thrilling confrontation at the end of the issue is fantastic. Sure, everything is going to be okay in the end, but Wells successfully makes it feel like things aren’t going to end well.
Romita Jr.’s art is solid throughout the issue. Some of the characters’ faces look unnatural, though the action looks fantastic across the panels. The composition throughout the action sequences, especially the last one, look especially great, making the best possible use of space. Hanna’s colors add plenty of depth to Romita’s style while also using darker colors to create a more tense atmosphere.
This isn’t a stellar issue of Amazing Spider-Man from front to back, but the back is really good. Wells has successfully set this arc up for some genuine thrills, with the promise of twists and turns coming soon.

The art in this volume is amazing. I love how much emotion you can see on the characters’ faces, especially on Peter and Aunt May.
