Age of X-Man: Apocalypse and the X-Tracts #3
Marvel Comics
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artists: Salva Espin & Israel Silva
Age of X-Man: Apocalypse and the X-Tracts has been my least favorite Age of X-Man title, which is a shame because it has a lot of cool stuff going for it. Unfortunately, after three issues in, my mind hasn’t changed too much. Still, there is a bit of hope.
The main issue with the series so far has been the pacing, which is unusual with a writer like Tim Seeley at the helm. It has a great cast, some cool ideas, but there is always too little or too much happening in the pages. Instead of getting the opportunity to genuinely enjoy the characters and their mission, I am constantly baffled at how shaky everything is. Some moments I’m genuinely bored, and then I’m suddenly jarred awake by something unexpected.
Despite the pacing, there is still quite a bit to like in this series’ story. More is revealed about En Sabbah Nur and his alignment with the rest of the characters. There are also some fine character moments, especially between Colossus and Kitty Pryde. Unfortunately, these moments are just a tad too rushed and left me wanting more.
Age of X-Man: Apocalypse and the X-Tracts’ art is still the best part of the series. Salva Espin does a fine job at drawing the action in the panels. There are still a few inconsistencies in the facial expressions, but nothing that is too distracting. Everything has an appropriate amount of scale when it comes to proportions too. This issue’s shining moments are the colors, which Israel Silva absolutely nails. The colors are vivid, diverse, and make every page with Dazzler and Unveil a work of art.
Age of X-Man: Apocalypse and the X-Tracts #3 suffers from pacing issues, but there is still a bit to like in this issue. I’d like to see more intimate moments between the characters before everything wraps up soon. If you have come this far, you might as well keep reading because if the series gets better it will start with issue #4.
