X-Men Gold #34 Marvel Comics Writer: Marc Guggenheim Artist: Michele Bandini “Godwar” is off to a great start, and part 2 successfully builds off of the interesting back-story of Storm and her village. Marc Guggenheim continues to write each character adequately. Storm shines in this issue as she tries to understand the circumstances that surround her and her former home. The previous issue didn’t give the best introduction to the arc’s antagonist, but the character is fleshed out much more impressively this time around. Outside of Storm’s arc, there isn’t much character development. Fortunately, the rest of the team’s…

X-Men Red #7 Marvel Comics Writer: Tom Taylor Artist: Carmen Carnero X-Men Red has possibly been the best mainline X-Men title on the stands. It has an interesting team complemented by solid writing by Tom Taylor. In X-Men Red #7, Atlantis is under attack while half of the team needs to recover some cargo in the not-so-friendly skies. Both under the sea and in the air is some mind control, but this wouldn’t be an X-Men title without that. The issue is basically just a long action sequence throughout, with very little storytelling through exposition or dialogue. I don’t…
West Coast Avengers #1 Marvel Comics Writer: Kelly Thompson Artists: Stefano Caselli & Triona Farrell Kelly Thompson has been on a roll lately. Everything she writes has been exceptional and a critical sensation, so it only makes sense that the expectations are high for her latest endeavor, West Coast Avengers. It is with great joy that I say that Thompson exceeds expectations in every way in this delightful series. Following a massive land shark attack in LA, Kate Bishop realizes that the West Coast doesn’t have the protection that it deserves. With the help of Clint Barton, Kate puts…

Mr. And Mrs. X #2 Marvel Comics Writer: Kelly Thompson Artists: Oscar Bazaldua &Frank D’Armata Mr. And Mrs. X #1 was one of the most surprisingly delightful debuts of the year. It had many of the X-Men at their best, dynamic character interactions, and a fun story. While the second issue isn’t as refreshing as the first, this series still appears to be on the right path. Mr. And Mrs. X #2 picks up where the previous issue left off and leaves the protagonists with a pretty rough honeymoon. Of course, now it appears that Deadpool is a part of…
Cold Spots #1 Image Comics Cullen Bunn is at his best when writing horror, and he has been releasing an impressive amount of creator-owned horror titles as of late. The newest title is Cold Spots, a five-issue miniseries with artist Mark Torres. Unlike previous titles, Cullen Bunn trades most of the jump scares, and shocking images for a tension-filled debut, and it mostly works in Cold Spots #1. This debut issue opens up with a fairly chilling scene, before introducing readers to Dan Kerr. Dan seems to be a protagonist that the reader can’t trust, with a shady aura…
Extermination #1 Marvel Comics Writer: Ed Brisson Artists: Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia It’s been six years since Hank McCoy brought the original X-Men to the present day. This massive decision has led to a shift in the way X-Men stories would be told since. The current era of X-Men is finally coming to an end, with both X-Men Gold and X-Men Blue ending, as well as the beginning of “Extermination.” Extermination is set to be a five-issue miniseries that promises to be the final adventure for the original X-Men. Ed Brisson writes the story, and for the most part, handles…

I’m absolutely in love with this book.” In Outer Darkness, humankind has successfully colonized the galaxy. But during our interstellar travels, we discovered a terrifying secret out in the vast reaches of space… Enter Captain…
Image Comics has announced that Edward Laroche (Almighty, Bad Summer) will launch a new military science fiction series, The Warning, this November. He will be handling both the series’ writing and art. From Image Comics’ Press Release: An enormous machine is slowly materializing in a major metropolitan city on the West Coast. No one knows who sent it, or why—except, perhaps, for the malevolent beings gliding silently through the inky vastness of space toward Earth. In response, a joint multinational combat brigade called Gladiator Two-Six is deployed. Outfitted with next-generation military science and weapons, they’re tasked with stopping any extraterrestrial threat that…
Crowded #1 Image Comics Writer: Christopher Sebela Artists: Ro Stein & Triona Farrell What if crowdfunding allowed for shady projects such as funding hits? Crowded takes on the idea and rolls with it, making for a fun and mysterious read that genuinely feels fresh. Crowded #1 introduces readers to Charlie, a young woman who makes a living off of job apps, and Vita, her personal bodyguard. Crowded takes place in a world with an economy that relies solely on apps and job shares. Unfortunately for Charlie, Reapr is a crowdfunding platform for assassinations, and she is the next million…
