Hard to believe we’re about halfway through 2022 now, but it’s almost July which means it’s time for the summer season of anime to begin! Here’s your handy primer for some of the new shows coming out to look out for:
The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2
This long anticipated second season (the original anime aired almost a decade ago back in 2013), follows a former demon King who after being transported to modern day Japan is forced to make a living working at a fast food diner. The first season was a hilarious fantasy show with a quirky cast of characters so look forward to hopefully more of the same in the new season!
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun
Probably the show I’m most looking forward to is the second season of dark fantasy show, Made in Abyss. The first one was easily one of my favourite shows of 2017. It follows Riko, a young girl whose mother disappeared into the mysterious abyss that is the focal point of her home and never returned. Together with an amnesiac robot boy she travels down into the dark abyss to discover the truth of what’s down there. Despite the cute visuals, this is decidedly not a show for children, featuring very dark themes and imagery which pushes into the horror genre. Definitely not an easy watch, the next season promises to hopefully reveal some more answers to what truly lies in the abyss.
Tokyo Mew Mew New
Following on the heels of the Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket reboots we have another retro shoujo series getting the shiny remake treatment. This time it’s the turn of Tokyo Mew Mew, a magical girl series which was pretty popular back in the early 2000s. The original series ran to just over 50 episodes and had a big fan following. It’s not a series I ever got into but it’s sure to bring back some of the old fans for the nostalgia.
The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting
Based on a manga series, this series sees one of the most fearsome members of the Japanese mafia tasked with his most important mission yet – taking care of his boss’s daughter. The trailer looks surprisingly wholesome, with a zany cast of characters and this one looks to be one of the sweeter animes of the season coming out.
RWBY: Ice Queendom
RWBY has been a popular franchise for quite sometime now, from it’s beginnings as a cgi animation and series of music videos created by Rooster Teeth. This summer, it’s seeing it’s anime debut. The series has always been somewhat anime inspired so this seems like a natural progression, the gorgeous visuals lending itself very well to the anime style. It’s been quite some time however since RWBY was in its heyday so it almost feels like too late for it to receive an anime adaptation now of all time but the promo trailers look exciting and interesting so one to keep an eye on for sure, particularly if you’re a fan of the original.
