It’s April already and that means another whole new season of anime is starting to air. So, what are some of the ones to keep an eye out for?
Spy x Family
Based on a manga, this series follows a family of rather extraordinary people: the father is a spy, the mother is an assassin, and the whole story told from the point of view of the child who is a telepath. Colourful visuals and a healthy dose of comedy make this series stand out, and look to have some super cute and wholesome moments despite it’s somewhat unorthodox set of characters.
Summertime Render
Promos for this series have been floating around for a while now, and initially I had thought this was going to be a drama about a boy who returns home to find out his childhood friend died in an accident. However there are hints in the trailer that this is actually going to take more of a mystery and horror route, with time looping shenanigans. Expect this one to get a lot of buzz!
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie
Another series based on a manga, this looks to be a cute rom-com about role reversal in a relationship, where the girlfriend acts like more of a “gentleman” then the guy. Looks to be a fun ride with lots of comedy and heart warming moment but I’m not expecting anything too serious with this one.
Tiger & Bunny Season 2
It’s hard to believe it’s been eleven years since the original Tiger and Bunny series first aired – and somehow now we’re getting a sequel which will be airing on Netflix exclusively. It’s hard to say how many people will remember this show after such a long gap, but the original series was a great mix of amazing characters, action and mystery featuring a set of superheroes who rise in fame through corporate partnerships. Following the unlikely duo of Tiger and Bunny, season 2 will hopefully follow in the same footsteps as the original season and tie up some of those plot hooks which never got resolved.
Friend Game
The trailers for this look fairly low budget, but the series is based of a fairly highly rated manga with the director being the same person who worked on cult favourite, Cells at Work, so there is likely more to this one then meets the eye. The series looks to follow a group of friends who end up getting pulled into a series of twisted mind games, in order to work off a debt they have mysteriously accrued. Likely to be similar in vein perhaps to other psychological mysteries like Death Note and the Zero Escape series, this will hopefully have a better narrative then the production values might suggest.
