Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out!
Studio: ENGI
Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy
Streaming on: Funimation
I feel like I say it every anime season. Slice of life is probably my favorite genre, so I am always looking for the next comfy show to watch every season. Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out (Uzaki-Chan was asobitai!) is not this season’s comfy slice of life. It is, however, probably going to be this season’s funniest slice of life, so that’s good enough for me.
Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out is a comedy anime about two college students who happen to be polar opposites. Sakurai is calm and loves the peaceful life, while the titular Uzaki is loud with a big personality. The two have incompatible personalities but Uzaki won’t leave Sakurai alone, and it is clear that two will be getting close over the course of the show. You have probably seen this dynamic before, but that doesn’t mean that this anime is bad.
As a comedy series, Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out‘s appeal will depend on the viewer’s sense of humor. At a glance, it seems like this anime depends on fanservice and ecchi moments to create comedy. Uzaki has a massive chest (Despite her very small frame) after all, and her naivety towards her body and phrasing does lead to quite a few of the expected jokes. Despite this, most of the jokes aren’t actually based around her chest. Most of the anime is just Uzaki making fun of Sakurai’s mannerisms while Sakurai tries to endure the abuse. Those who like anime like Teasing Master Takagi-san or Himouto! Umaru-chan will likely find some value in Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out’s humor.
The art and animation in Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out is pretty average, with nothing really standing out as great. A couple of scenes involve some questionable physics with Uzaki’s bust, but otherwise, the production is unremarkable. Uzaki’s voice acting is fantastic and suits the character well. This is an anime that’s full of energy, and Uzaki is who lights the fuse on all of the fun. Like the animation, the OST and sound effects aren’t anything remarkable. They aren’t distracting and they don’t harm the experience, so it is hard to ask for much more.
Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out is a competent comedy anime that manages to avoid the low-hanging fruit most of the time. Its characters are endearing, and the jokes often hit their marks. This isn’t innovative at all, but if you are looking for a laugh and you don’t mind the boob and sex jokes, this is a fine anime for the summer season.
