This is the second magic/school/fantasy anime that I am reviewing today. Maybe this is going to be the hot genre of the season. Maybe isekai will finally be replaced? The Misfit of Demon King Academy (Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha) is a fantasy series that takes place in school for identifying and prepping those who could be the reincarnation of the Demon King. Anos Voldigord is the true reincarnation of the Demon King, who was feared by everyone 2000 years ago. His return is met with Demons who are all weaker than him due to long-lasting peace.

Overpowered protagonists can be a bit tiring, but sometimes when anime are aware of their protagonists they can be fun to indulge in. Anos’ power is made clear within the first ten minutes of this debut, eradicating an enemy demon over and over again. The scene establishes Anos as a potent antihero as viewers get to know him. As if the first scene wasn’t enough, another scene towards the end of the episode once again shows off Anos’ strength. The scenes are both thoroughly entertaining despite being mostly dialogue.

Outside of the action, the show has a great sense of humor. Anos is full of jokes, and he is surrounded by characters who are great for comic relief. The cast is somewhat trope-y, but they are still enjoyable nonetheless. This first episode only serves to establish a couple of characters, but it is still full of memorable moments.

The biggest surprise of this episode is the quality of the animation. All of the fancy demon effects are full of energy. The magic looks fantastic too. If the rest of the series can keep up, studio Silver Link might have something special. The voice acting is great too, giving Anos’ lines some fantastic delivery.

This is a strong debut, and fans of fantasy anime will certainly want to check this one out. The school setting brings a unique angle to the anime, while the protagonist is wildly charismatic. Be sure to add The Misfit of Demon Academy to your watch list this season.
