That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 3
Studio: 8Bit
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy
Stream: Crunchyroll
So far, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime has been the most delightful surprise of the Fall 2018 season. It’s a fun approach to the isekai genre and doesn’t take itself too seriously. After leaving the cave, our slime protagonist has run into a village of goblins under attack by direwolves. For whatever reason, Rimuru has vowed to help the goblins in their time of need.
Rimuru is constantly learning about his unique abilities, and it is an absolute joy to watch. The protagonist has breathed new life into the goblin village as they face the direwolves. His abilities have applications that lead to both humorous results, as well as practical ones. The siege is a surprisingly serious scene as the protagonist tries to do the impossible.
When the characters aren’t fighting, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime is surprisingly wholesome. The naming scene, in particular, made me love the goblins more than I thought possible. I found myself giggling throughout the episode as the Slime made everyone happy. Knowing that it is a simple slime that is changing so many lives make everything much more humorous. Overpowered protagonists aren’t uncommon in the genre, but overpowered slimes are pretty much unheard of.
As far as animation goes, episode three doesn’t have the spectacle of the previous two episodes, but it still impresses. Everything looks and sounds impressive throughout. There are no noticeable ugly or poorly animated scenes throughout the episode. The music is whimsical and successfully carries the tone of the series.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is quickly growing on me, and is a contender for my favorite series of the season. I haven’t enjoyed an isekai this much since Konosuba, and while this isn’t as funny, it has just as much heart. If you haven’t given this series a try yet, I highly recommend it.
