The mobile game, Tales of Crestoria was released back in July and is the first mainline game in the franchise to be released as a free mobile game rather than on console. I’ve actually been playing it since the release date, though with mixed feelings as I found the game to be rather buggy on my devices. Still, I was impressed with the dark themes of the story and liked the new cast they introduced. There’s also some great commentary throughout on cancel culture, and the nature of sin.
Tales of Crestoria – The Wake of Sin acts as something of a trailer for this game, a short fourteen-minute CGI animation that goes over the events of the game’s prologue. It’s so short though, there’s not really a whole lot to go over in this review. I’m not a big fan of CGI animation usually, with a few notable exceptions, and my feelings were rather mixed for this short animation.
Whilst the general animation for the lighting and scenery is absolutely gorgeous, full of colours and depth, the animation itself doesn’t really suit two of the main cast, Kanata and Misella, who are unfortunately the main focus of the short. It makes them look rather harsh and weird, giving off some uncanny valley vibes which doesn’t really show them in the best light. The first cast member who appears at the end, Vicious, suits the style much more however as his crazier more twisted look suits the animation more. Overall though it just makes the characters look odd and uneven compared to how beautiful the rest of the animation is.
The music is also gorgeous, and featuring music from the original first Crestoria trailer (which had a funky 8bit style and animation). The story itself is narrated over by a female voice (possibly Makina), who skims over the initial events in a montage-like way, which is perhaps a little confusing for any viewers who are not familiar with the game. Overall though, the short nature of this animation does render it somewhat lacking – it’s more of a teaser than anything with real substance but it does showcase beautifully some of the key themes and ideas in the Crestoria storyline. Definitely not a must-watch for new viewers but a nice little add on for existing fans of the game.
