Every anime season, we get a couple of short, cute series that are there to just give us all a sweet time. One of the many potential series to fit this category this anime season is Senryu Girl (Senyruu Shoujo). The series is based on a 4-Koma manga and seems to follow the source material faithfully.

Nanako Yukishiro isn’t too fond of speaking, and she is awful at getting her words together. To communicate efficiently, Nanako only writes in Senryuu, a trait that is endearing to everyone to her classmates. This is pretty convenient since she is in the literature club, but it, of course, a struggle to get through day-to-day interactions.

Nanako is surrounded by other quirky characters, notably the scary looking Eiji, who she seems to be close to. She finds comfort in him and works to help him express himself with literature. There is also Amane, a club member who mostly acts as a mentor to the characters.

Overall there isn’t anything deep, and the episode relies on a few established tropes and even jokes that we have seen before in slice of life shows. Most of the appeal comes from learning about Japanese literature while watching a cute trying to get through her day. For those who want things like this, you’ll feel right at home. It feels like there is a lot of room for the development of the two main characters relationship, but with 12-minute episodes (Including the OP and ED), there isn’t a lot of room for plot progression at a decent pace.

The opening and ending credits are cute and fit the feel of the series. Visually, there isn’t much here, and overall all the production feels kind of low in this first episode. The animations are often noticeably choppy. Fortunately, the cute art style makes up for this, especially because there isn’t a lot actually going on, so the poor animation doesn’t detract from the experience too much. The sound throughout the episode is all standard fare, matching the visual beats to make for a fine experience.

There isn’t much to take away from the first episode of Senryu Girl. This could be a cute show, but there is a lot to see before deciding if this is a must-see this season. For now, enjoy the sweetness and the haiku.

Marcus isn't good at a lot, but he is an expert at replaying Final Fantasy games despite there being a lot of good stuff out there. He also loves comics, board games, and anime. He thinks Chip Zdarsky is a treasure.
