Anime Review: I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Episode 1

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level

    Studio: Revoroot

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Slice of Life

    Streaming: Crunchyroll

Honestly, at this point, I’m getting a little fed up with seeing yet another isekai anime in the new season’s lineup. This one follows the ‘reincarnated into another world’ trope, albeit with some different ideas which make the anime a much cosier watch than the typical adventure/action fare we normally see. If the ridiculously long title of the series doesn’t give it away, this series originally took the form of a light novel. In it we follow Azusa who after overworking herself and dying at a young age is reincarnated into a new world. The benevolent angel who gave her a new life granted her youth and immortality and Azusa decides to use this in the best way she can think possible – contrary to her previous life she aims to relax and have the most chill lifetime she can.

She settles down into an easy life quite easily, and whiles away her time for three hundred years or so in her small house by relaxing, cooking, making medicines for people in the nearby village, and taking out the local slime population a little at a time to make money for her living expenses. XP after XP adds up however and when after all that time she checks in at the local adventurer’s guild, she discovers to her consternation, that all that relaxing slime hunting has accidentally levelled up her power so much she’s extremely powerful. In true video game style, the slow grind has paid off in the end, and Azusa now finds herself a Level 99 witch… something which when word gets out makes her peaceful existence suddenly less so. Suddenly she has people bothering her all the time, from adventurers challenging her like she’s a final boss, to a dragon who is offended that there is someone out there more powerful. Is this the end of Azusa’s relaxing second life?

It’s a cute premise to a series and that’s mostly what this series is – cute and with a liberal smattering of comedy. It ends up just being rather average overall, however, and there really isn’t a whole lot to mark this out as anything truly special. The animation and music are fine but don’t really leave much of an impression. Whilst Azusa herself and some of the other characters who have interactions with her are animated reasonably well in a colourful style, the background characters and scenery are rather lazy. The opening song is rather catchy and reveals that inevitably Azusa is going to gather herself a little harem of girls to join her – sadly another trope of many isekai series even if the gender is somewhat reversed here.

There is a nice emotional touch towards the end of the first episode when Azusa talks to her new pupil, Laika, and admonishes her for working too hard – something which clearly hits close to home because she died from overworking. It’s a nice scene and heartwarming, but otherwise, there’s not a lot else to really recommend with this series. With so many other interesting series out this season, this anime just doesn’t really stand up with the competition at all, and unless you’re an avid watcher of isekai or comedy series, it’s likely this one will slip under the radar.

I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level

    6.7 Average Watch

A cute and fluffy isekai featuring a relatable female protagonist. Full of comedy and slice of life elements, this is one of the more low-key animes of the series and a good popcorn filler if you like this kind of series.

Kila trained as a librarian and consequently reads far too many books. In their spare time, they work on writing fantasy novels but inevitably get distracted by planning dnd campaigns instead. Anime and cosplay are a passion of theirs, and they can often be found yelling at video games or their sewing machine.
