Anime Review: How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno Episode 1

How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno.

    Studio: Lespirit

    Genre: Comedy

    Stream: HiDive, VRV

In How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno, Ueno is a gifted third-year high schooler and inventor. She is also in love with the idea of being in love and wants to express this by showing off her great inventions to Tanaka. Each episode is short, with less than a 12 minute run-time for each episode. This format tends to work well for comedies, and at a glance, How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno seems to be a cute and humorous series.

The first episode of How Clumsy You Are Miss Ueno is divided into two mini-episodes. Neither part of the episode focuses on giving the characters proper introductions and emphasizes on the humor rather than the characters. In the episode’s first half, Ueno has invented a purifier that can turn everything into drinkable water, including urine. To show off her success to her crust, Tanaka, she wants him to drink her purified urine. The second half goes in a different direction, in which she wants to “test” the angle that someone needs to be in order to peek up a girl’s skirt. Of course, Tanaka is the test subject who needs to observe Ueno.

Neither episode is particularly deep, which isn’t surprising given the subject matter. The humor is hit or miss and will only appeal to a particular demographic. I found myself chuckling at the episode a few times, but it never really hit me as a must watch for general audiences. Most of the jokes rely on classic anime tropes and nothing feels really original here, despite the fun concept. Even though the second half of the episode seems like it would be full of fanservice, it barely has any at all. This might allow Miss Ueno to appeal to a slightly broader audience, but again, the content matter isn’t really anything special.

As far as production goes, this anime is about as average as you can get. There isn’t too much noteworthy animation in this episode, though there are a few particularly good looking shots and angles. The voice actors do a fine job, especially the narrator that explains Ueno’s inventions. The ED is flashy and full of color and appropriately highlights what the series is all about. The music wasn’t particularly noteworthy but still fits in with the content.

There might be a small group of anime viewers that will like How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno. It simply doesn’t have much broad appeal, and most of the jokes are uninspired or just not funny. Still, with 12-minute episodes, this show is at least worth checking out for those who like the concept.

Ueno San will be funny to some, but for most, this will be a pass.
