The fall season of 2023 is brimming with highly-anticipated anime series that are sure to captivate audiences with their diverse themes and engaging narratives. From emotionally charged adaptations to quirky and lighthearted tales, this season promises a little something for every anime enthusiast. Let’s dive into the most anticipated shows that are set to grace our screens.
Sousou no Frieren
Sousou no Frieren is simply one of the best ongoing manga out there right now. It’s beautiful, and somber, and offers a look at fantasy heroes that isn’t usually seen in the medium. Now it’s finally getting an anime adaptation, and it seems that Madhouse gets it. This is one of the must-watch anime of the year, and viewers are almost guaranteed to feel some feelings when they aren’t basking in the coziness.
Undead Unluck
The first bit of Undead Unluck is pretty uncomfortable, and full of typical anime dumb stuff including needless groping. Readers who don’t abandon this manga after the first chapter (I sure did) are later treated to a silly and fun time that apparently eases off on the unnecessary fanservice. This shouldn’t be a lights-out series, but if the anime tones down the unfortunate early chapters in this adaptation, this should be a pleasant time.
Spy X Family Season 2
This one needs no introduction. Spy x Family took the world by storm, and all of us manga readers are grateful. This is an incredibly well-paced and funny anime series that perfectly balances coziness, tension, and ridiculous humor. Anime doesn’t get much better than that, and season 2 promises a lot more fun.
The Apothecary Diaries
Like Sousou no Frieren, this is another calm story that is also excellent. The Apothecary Diaries offers a familiar yet non-conventional storyline with beautiful art, a historical setting, and a likable yet atypical protagonist. The series blends the seinen and shoujo genres and focuses on the protagonist’s interests in herbs, poisons, medicine, and experiments.
Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2
Girls as horses racing in a derby is a weird idea, but the first season of Uma Musume showed that it can be entertaining. It’s cute, it’s fun, and has that excellent Cygames production. Anyone who wants to turn their brain off should enjoy this sequel.
