Most of us are still quarantining at home, meaning that we have a whole lot of time to waste. If you are like me, you’ll spend that time playing phone games. I’m a huge sports fan, but it is hard to find decent sports games in the sea of trash in the Play Store. Fortunately, I’ve found a few gems that are perfect for those who like managing teams and creating dynasties. Here are five sports games worth investing time into.
Pro Football Coach
It’s hard to go wrong with any of the Coach series games if you are okay with text-based simulators. Whether it is Pro Football Coach, Football Coach 2, or College Hoops Coach, you are guaranteed tons of hours of simulated management fun. My personal favorite is Pro Football Coach. As a diehard Indianapolis Colts fan, I can download current rosters from the fantastic community and start a decades-long dynasty. There is even the option to play in an online league with your friends. While the game is mostly just text, the simulations are solid, and rebuilding a team is addicting. It can get repetitive after a few seasons, but I always find myself coming back to this one every couple of months to play out a few more seasons. College Hoops Coach is a solid game, but if you want to build a real simulated legacy you should go for the next game on this list. Play Store Link
Campus Dynasty
Campus Dynasty feels an awful lot like College Hoops Coach but has a few extra things going for it that elevates it for me. The simulations feel a bit more consistent and jumping from team to team as a coach just feels better. The cute art for the coaches and players is kind of endearing, and you can get a bit more hands-on from game to game. The presentation is a step up from the Coach Series which is a welcome bonus as well. Just about everything is customizable, from names to colors. Campus Dynasty feels a bit more difficult than the other games on this list, so if you get frustrated by not getting a title every year this might not be the game for you. Still. this is one of the deepest text-based sims in the Play Store. Play Store Link
Retro Bowl
There isn’t much for me to say about Retro Bowl that I didn’t already say in my review. This is simply the best game on the Play Store for those who are looking for an arcade football game. The graphics are charming, the gameplay is simple, and there is no need to spend any money on in-game purchases (Just the initial $1 to unlock the full game). Retro Bowl is still receiving updates to enhance the experience, making this a game to invest in for the long term. Play Store Link
New Star Soccer
Out of all of the games I put on this list, this one is the one I feel most guilty about. The UI is ugly, and everything about New Star Soccer feels monetized. It features a stamina system that requires in-game currency to replenish or you watch an ad. You can get extra currency from watching ads. The best agents, trainers, and player gear are all locked behind in-app purchases. Despite all of this, I couldn’t stop playing New Star Soccer, and I’m glad to say that I did it all without spending a penny. The beginning grind is difficult, but once you get past that New Star Soccer is one of the most addicting games for simulating a single player’s rise to stardom. It’s a bit more hands-on than most games on this list and it’s entirely made up of minigames. For those wanting an arcade career mode that can be played for 2 minute or 2-hour sessions, this is a fine addition to the library. Don’t be tempted to spend your money, just be patient, and learn how to play the game. It pays off. Play Store Link
Hoop League Tactics
Hoop League Tactics is easily the most unique game on our list. It’s a turn-based tactical basketball that plays more like a board game or strategy game than a sports game. This is one the game on the list that might actually have broader appeal than the rest. The art is charming, the customization is ridiculous, and the gameplay is solid. Fans of games like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics will find plenty to love in this little game. It’s worth the price of admission. Play Store Link
